LATEST INDEPENDENT CANDIDATES ANNOUNCED FOR NEWARK AND SHERWOOD DISTRICT COUNCIL AND NEWARK TOWN COUNCIL, AS INDEPENDENTS FOR NEWARK (IFN) GROWS

Independents for Newark (IfN) - a new community group supporting independent candidates to stand in the May 2023 Town and District council elections - has announced its next two independent councillors.

Roger Bell, age 70, is standing for Newark and Sherwood District Council (Sutton-on-Trent).  Seeing the quality of life for the average working family significantly deteriorating - especially those living in Newark and Sherwood - Roger feels his now retired life gives him the time and energy to make a difference by standing for election.

“I feel enthused to be standing as an independent at the next local elections in May. I feel privileged to be working with an excellent team of people at Independents for Newark who share my vision for a better future,” says Roger.

Having designed his own renowned eco-house, Roger is keen to use his construction expertise and design skills to drive effective solutions to the cost-of-living crisis and threats from climate change including, raising stronger and safer building standards for all new houses, encouraging less polluting transport systems and providing healthier and more affordable transport options and protecting and enhancing green spaces with good public access, where nature and people can flourish together.

“Crumbling roads, combined with one of the highest council taxes in the country, are symbolic of poor Conservative leadership so poor. I’m standing to say enough is enough. I am completely disillusioned with our seemingly corrupt government and am looking forward to standing as an Independent, free of political dogma, to make the right decisions for our local needs,” says Roger.

The fourth candidate announced this week is Dawn Campbell, age 62, standing for Newark Town Council.

Dawn has been involved with various cross-cultural groups, both locally and internationally, and has thrived on seeing how other places achieve great things. Dawn believes there is a wealth of experience and expertise to tap into to raise the profile of this beautiful, historic, well-connected town.

“I am always open to others' opinions and like to be hands-on locally,” says Dawn. “Newark is a fantastic place but is not achieving its full potential and we need to ensure we have a representative, dynamic and forward-thinking coalition of voices on local government to achieve this.”

Dawn is an advocate for shopping locally and supporting our local businesses. If elected, she says will work hard to ensure Newark residents feel safe, secure and healthy in their town, supported by superb amenities and services.

IfN is providing an experienced and supportive platform for potential Independent candidates, assisting them in navigating the world of local political campaigning, raising their profile and helping build their connections.

Since announcing their first candidates, the group’s support has been growing with new individuals wishing to stand coming forward all the time.

IfN will be announcing new candidates on a weekly basis up to the elections on 4 May.

You can meet the IfN team, including some candidates, this Saturday 04 February at Newark’s Royal Market. Members of the group will be available between 9 am - 3 pm to ask questions and get support and guidance on registering to vote.
