PRESS RELEASE: INDEPENDENTS FOR NEWARK (IFN) TAKES A STAND AGAINST CLOSURE OF TICKET OFFICES

Independents for Newark (IfN) is appalled by East Midlands Railways' (EMR) and London North Eastern Railway (LNER) plans to permanently close ticket offices at train stations, including Newark Northgate and Newark Castle.

In an era where accessibility, convenience and passenger support should be paramount, IfN expresses its dismay over these decisions, highlighting the adverse consequences it could inflict on passengers and the broader community.

IfN has taken immediate action by initiating communication with local stations and requesting leaflets and badges to raise awareness in the community. Additionally, they are drafting consultation responses and communications to Newark’s MP, Robert Jenrick.

IfN Councillors have also been visiting Newark’s ticket offices, talking to staff and customers to hear their positions and concerns.

District Cllr Emma Oldham, says, "The potential closure of ticket offices sends shockwaves through the very foundations of passenger accessibility. EMR's lack of a transparent roadmap for fulfilling its commitments under the accessible travel policy is a deeply disconcerting red flag."

"The void left by the absence of staff at ticket offices raises concerns about passenger safety and a potential spike in crime rates. Additionally, the perplexing contradiction between government commitments to sustainable public transport and the current scenario is deeply troubling."

District Cllr Neil Ross condemned the rail company's move, stating, "We are resoundingly disappointed by EMR and LNER’s disregard for passenger needs and the Government's stance on staffed stations. The public sentiment is unequivocally against this decision. Rather than enhancing the passenger experience, this decision could divert ticket sales to online platforms, some operating from distant corners of the globe, this is not what travellers want.”

Cllr Ross adds, "The proposed changes threaten to erode the presence of staff at railway stations, potentially diminishing the sense of security and warmth that such spaces should exude. It's time rail operators assume full accountability for all facets of passenger well-being, ensuring travel remains safe, accessible, efficient and economically viable."

IfN is urging Newark residents to voice their opposition to the closure of Newark Northgate by sending emails detailing their grievances to: ticketoffice.lner@transportfocus.org.uk and EMR’s ticket office closure plans at Newark Castle station to ticketoffice.emr@transportfocus.org.uk

District Cllr Adrian Amer reinforces IfN's dedication to its mission: "This decision has left us profoundly disheartened. IfN remains committed to amplifying the collective voice of our community and challenging this detrimental choice."
