PRESS RELEASE: INDEPENDENTS FOR NEWARK (IFN) WIN A MAJORITY ON NEWARK TOWN COUNCIL AND 8 SEATS ON DISTRICT COUNCIL

Independents for Newark (IfN) emerged victorious in the local elections held on May 4, with 15 out of 17 winning seats on the town and district councils. The party now holds the majority on Newark Town Council and eight seats on District Council, making it a key player in the future of Newark and Sherwood.

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to represent the people of Newark and Sherwood and make positive changes for our town and district,” says Emma Oldham who won a District seat for Balderton North and Coddington.

“Through months of perseverance, determination and hard work, IfN surveyed the needs and wants of local people first and now our candidates and supporters have emerged as winners. This victory for IfN shows people can effect change in their communities - as we saw with the Stop the Chop campaign, the very roots of IfN.”

With 20 out of the 39 district seats needed for an outright majority, IFN's success in the recent elections has positioned them as key players in the future of Newark and Sherwood. The Conservative party holds 14 seats, Labour 11 seats, Independents for Newark 8 seats, Liberal Democrats 3 seats, and Non-aligned Independents 3 seats.

IfN's commitment to creating a bright and prosperous future for the local community, through positive change in policy and decision-making, without the interference of party politics, has struck a chord with voters in Newark and Sherwood. The recent win positions IfN as a strong advocate for independent voices and policies that align with the interests of the local community.

“IfN's victory marks a shift in the political landscape of Newark and Sherwood, with no single party dominating the district council. It is important for all elected representatives to work together for the betterment of the community,” says Cllr Rowan Cozens, for Beacon District.

"IfN winning a large number of seats in our District, Town and a local Parish Council is a testament to the importance of active community participation," says Jenni Harding who acted as agent for all the District Council candidates. "I will be supporting all our newly elected Councillors as they take on their new roles in local government and wish them the best of luck."
