Independent Councillors Embrace "Big Newark Sleepout" to Spotlight Homelessness

In a bold move to address the pressing issue of homelessness in Newark and Sherwood District, three Independent Councillors have announced their participation in the upcoming 'Big Newark Sleepout' on Friday, March 8th, 2024.

District Councillors Emma Oldham and David Moore, alongside Balderton Parish Councillor Debbie Moore, will spend a night experiencing 'rough sleeping' firsthand, confined to cardboard boxes. Their goal is not only to raise funds but to significantly heighten awareness about homelessness across the district.

The event will direct its efforts towards supporting the Newark Emmaus Trust, a charitable organisation offering accommodation and care to young homeless individuals, and YMCA Newark and Sherwood, in addressing homelessness in the community.

David who participated in last year's event, expressed his dedication to continuing support. "We are both looking forward to being able to support these worthy charities by taking part in The Big Sleep Out again this year. We know it's going to be a cold night for us, but one night for us is nothing compared to what the homeless go through constantly," remarked David. "We're asking the people of Newark to, if they can, to dig deep and donate!"

Councillor Emma Oldham added, “Homelessness is a pressing social issue that affects individuals and families in profound ways. Behind each statistic is a human story, often marked by hardship, vulnerability and desperation,” says Emma Oldham. “Newark and Sherwood District Council recorded and supported 98 rough sleepers in the last year alone. By raising awareness about homelessness, we hope to shed light on the often-overlooked struggles of our community members and foster empathy and understanding.”
