Cllr Jean Hall - Newark and Sherwood District Council (Balderton South) Chair & Balderton Parish Council (Balderton South)
“As the results were rolling in on Friday 5 May it was definitely Independents Day. I couldn't have been more proud or excited to be part of this new chapter in Newark and Sherwood’s history as one of the many newly elected Independents for Newark councillors.
This really showed the power of the ballot as there have been some stormy waters regarding local issues involving councils in this district recently. As a more diverse group of councillors, there is now the opportunity for us to listen to the residents, while making sure the electorate is more informed and included in decisions that could affect them.
My road to becoming a councillor in Balderton was not taken lightly but through my passion for the village where I was born, live and work. As such I will endeavour to promote the needs of Balderton both commercial and residential, encouraging a community that supports and involves all residents, businesses, community groups, schools and community policing. With the present country-wide issues, tackling poverty and creating a safer, greener village.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who voted and had faith in me, this will inspire and encourage my work in Balderton with all the other amazing Parish and District councillors elected.”
As your local Councillor, I will strive to:
Promote the need for more social housing and ensure that our local infrastructure matches building growth, including providing stronger local health services, public transport links, schools and shops.
Initiate discussions with local communities to establish their needs and advocate local youth meeting points, promote apprenticeships and job fairs.
Tackle crime by encouraging a ‘report it’ community - helping each other protect residents and their property.
Work closely with local schools and Parish Councils, to ensure services and events are fully inclusive.
Listen to representatives of local organisations, interest groups and businesses to best represent people fairly and openly and ensure local money funds local initiatives.
Champion local campaigns and encourage community events in our neighbourhoods.
Local politics should always put local people, businesses and services first. As an independent councillor, free from the pressures of party politics, I will now work tirelessly for safer, healthier, more productive communities, without the burden of over-development and loss of services and greenspace.
ONE YEAR ON …
I am delighted to be taking up the role of Chair of the district and meeting many new people. Collaborating with Safer Streets and NSDC community teams has been enlightening and fruitful. Additionally, supporting the progress of underdeveloped areas, like installing new play equipment and community planters on the Mount Road estate in Balderton, is vital for fostering community pride. My commitment remains serving the residents in all aspects as my utmost priority, given my lifelong residency here.
Jean Hall, the local lass, working for a more connected, greener, safer environment.
